Who we are

Through five years of unprecedented What Women Want listening campaigns, powered by our Ask Listen Act approach, we heard directly from 3.5 million underserved women and girls.
Hatua is a women-led social enterprise model born from the unique Ask, Listen, Act approach. Over the past years, we listened to the voices of more than 3.5 million women and girls across all 47 counties of Kenya. Their message was clear, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) cannot be separated from the daily struggles of survival.
Women told us about the impossible choices they face. whether to buy food or pay fare to reach an antenatal clinic, whether to risk childbirth without a mama kit or sell a family asset to cover hospital bills, whether to walk long distances for water or miss a vaccination appointment. They spoke of giving birth without dignity, of menstruating without safe products, of being excluded from decisions that directly affect their health and their families’ futures.
Hatua is the step from voices into action. We exist to turn these voices into solutions designed with and for women. Through Action Village Centres, Hatua integrates health, livelihoods, dignity, and leadership into one holistic model. We bring care closer, create pathways for women to earn and sustain their families, restore dignity and build platforms where women can lead and hold systems accountable.
At Hatua, we believe that survival should not come at the cost of dignity, that women should not have to choose between food and healthcare, and that leadership is not a privilege but a right.
