Our Vision & Mission
Vision
Communities where women and girls live healthy and dignified lives, where no mother misses antenatal care because of poverty, where caregivers are supported, children grow strong, and women have the means to provide, nurture, and thrive.
Mission
To sustain lives by integrating livelihoods, care, and dignity as enablers of maternal, newborn, and child health. We equip women with skills and income pathways, provide holistic care through Action Village Centres and mobile clinics, and create supportive spaces where women can live, heal, and raise their families with strength and dignity.
Vision
Rooted in women and girls’ voices, communities where women and girls are healthy, respected, earning, shaping decisions, and living in dignity upheld by accountable systems.
Mission
To turn women’s voices into practical solutions that improve livelihoods, health, care, and leadership, addressing the daily polycrisis women and girls face, while holding systems accountable to their promises.
Our Approach
The Hatua Action Village Initiative is born from White Ribbon Alliance Kenya’s Ask – Listen – Act Power Approach, the foundation of what we do. Women and girls told us what they want for their reproductive, maternal, and newborn health: health and wellbeing, dignity, and livelihoods. We listened as they prioritized without filters, and we are acting with them to realize these needs.
Through Action Villages and Mobile Action Villages, we deliver Whole Woman Solutions; practical tools, care, and opportunities that women can use, sustain, and grow.
Whole Solutions. Whole Lives.

Who we are
Hatua is a women-led social enterprise model born from the unique Ask, Listen, Act approach. Over the past years, we listened to the voices of more than 3.5 million women and girls across all 47 counties of Kenya. Their message was clear, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) cannot be separated from the daily struggles of survival.
Women told us about the impossible choices they face. whether to buy food or pay fare to reach an antenatal clinic, whether to risk childbirth without a mama kit or sell a family asset to cover hospital bills, whether to walk long distances for water or miss a vaccination appointment. They spoke of giving birth without dignity, of menstruating without safe products, of being excluded from decisions that directly affect their health and their families’ futures.
Who we are
Through five years of unprecedented What Women Want listening campaigns, powered by our Ask Listen Act approach, we heard directly from 3.5 million underserved women and girls. What they revealed is a polycrisis of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health, women’s health, and overall wellbeing. In the cracks: indignities in care, limited or no health information to make decisions, economic exclusion, lack of mentorship and healing spaces, and no resources to care for themselves and their families. Climate shocks, childcare gaps, water scarcity, and fragmented programs deepen the crisis.
Why Hatua?
What we do

Economic Freedom
Poverty is not just about income. It is a barrier that steals health and well-being. Women told us they are forced to choose between food for their families and transport to antenatal care, between paying school fees and paying for a safe birth.

Mama Care
We bring care directly to where women and girls live. MamaCare takes a holistic approach to maternal, newborn, and child health, offering not only information but the practical support women need to act on it.

Her Dignity
We respond to women and girl’s dignity demands by addressing the barriers head-on. Through access to environmentally friendly pads, we are transforming the lives of girls who once lived in period poverty and shame.

Her Leadership
Women are not passive participants in change, they are the architects of it. Leadership, in our model, is about igniting the inherent power within women to define their futures and transform their communities.
What we do

Economic Power
We build women led enterprises that generate income, create jobs, and reinvest in communities. Reshaping local economies with dignity and sustainability at the core. These social enterprises also contribute to sustaining WRA Kenya’s mission.

Practical Skills and Livelihoods
We equip women and youth with practical tools and skills that open doors to enterprise, dignified work, and climate resilient livelihoods, ensuring resilience for families and communities.

Driving Systemic Change
We ignite the leadership and decision-making power of underserved women, girls, and youth by strengthening their voice and agency through mentorship, coaching, and intergenerational dialogue. From village truths to national policies, we connect lived experiences to decisions, budgets, and accountability. Through radical listening, advocacy, and community co-creation, we drive justice, sustainability, and lasting change for women and girls.

Whole Woman Health and Community Care
We deliver respectful healthcare, self care, mental health support, and community driven care, from safe childbirth to childcare and safe spaces that sustain dignity across life stages.
Our impact
Women and girls empowered with practical tools and life-saving information to take charge of their health and wellbeing.
Our impact
Every Purchase Contributes to Her Story of Change
Every stitch, every bead, every craft tells the story of a woman already on her hatua, her journey towards access to healthcare, safe childbirth, and dignified motherhood.
She is already weaving change with her hands, turning her skill into strength and possibility.
Your purchase fuels her progress, helping her afford transport to the health facility, attend antenatal and postnatal care visits, and provide nutritious food for her child.
Every item you buy is more than a product, it’s a pathway to closing the loop between women’s income and their access to reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) services.

Where we work

We work across more than 40 counties in Kenya to strengthen Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) and Self-Care in Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH). Our reach continues to grow as we collaborate with women, communities, and health providers to ensure dignified, quality care. (include pictures and videos)
